Headlandseeheads (2003)
Heads made from kelp, common to the west coast of the US. These objects were created in the fall of 2003 at the Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco, thanks to a grant from by the Arts Link program in New York.
During the 90’s the artist – fascinated by the aesthetic and technical qualities of this magical plant – developed an original method: with the unique tools made exclusively for this purpose, he shaped The „heads“ in a way that is completely different from any existing sculpting technique.
The artist himself describes this creative process as a spiritual activiti bordering on magic on one Hand and plastic Surgery on the other; the many hours of uninterrupted concentration and physically demanding work are at the end rewarded by an intense experience ensuing from the achievement: The animation of a being that had originated in the transcultural beyond.
